Unfortunately for WVU, they're not just embarrassed and playing below their ability level. The reality is they're only good, not great.
Geno didn't show himself well Saturday with taking on he tarp, and losing, etc. He whined almost as much as RG3 did last year when he got hit and fell behind.

How bad was Geno Smith's night? He fought a tarp, and the tarp won.

Clearly, West Virginia has an attitude problem. They have the talent and skill to compete and win in this conference. I honestly think they believed they'd waltz into the conference and stroll right through it. They don't seem to have any resolve to fight through adversity? Like most people, they thought Texas and OU were the only two teams they had to deal with in this conference, but they lost to two teams they didn't expect to be contenders and now they're clueless. They're learning the hard way that every team in this conference has the ability to blow you out if you show up flat.

They really thought they were hot stuff after beating UT. There were plenty of couches lit on fire in Morgantown that night.
Their problem was the perception that UT was the conference front-runner. They behaved like they had just won the conference, not yet having even played K-State and OU, no offense to TTU who hadn't yet showed themselves to be a contender.

You're absolutely right. They thought they'd taken down the giant blocking their path, but that's their naive fault. They didn't know, like we Big 12 fans already do, that games in Lubbock or Ames or Waco or Stillwater can bring it all crumbling down if you're not ready. It's not just WV who thought that either, the rest of the country thinks of the conference as "Texas and Oklahoma", and they thought that once WV beat Texas all they had to do was survive home games against KSU and OU. That's why I take so much evil delight in beating the hell out of WV, because now the rest of the country realizes that this conference ain't as soft as they thought.
Remember in the offseason when I said I was kind of offended how everybody looked at A&M and Mizzou and said there's no way they can compete in the SEC, but WV would walk right into the Big 12 and win the conference in their first year?

Actually, I think that nationally our perception drops as a conference when KSU and TTU lead the way. The thinking is that if these schools can win, the conference must not be as strong as when OU and UT are winning.

I completely agree that a conference's best programs have to be leading the way. The 2nd tier* teams like ours need to legitimately challenge those programs. OU is ahead of Tech right now though, they're in 2nd place ahead of us and I'd be surprised if they lost again this season. Texas is still ranked, albeit on name alone, but with easier games coming up they should be able to stay ranked.
I do agree that the perception of our conference is not great with our two teams at the top, have you noticed the dismissive sarcasm from the media towards Kansas State's remaining schedule? They keep making comments like "Kansas State should be heavy favorites the rest of the season with their toughest test coming at home to Texas Tech"
*I use the term "2nd tier" kindly, teams like ours along with Oklahoma State, TCU, etc are not name brand or elite programs, but we're nowhere near the bottom feeders either.

This should be a good game. KU has been to a BCS game and both KSU and Tech have been close to playing in the mNC game before. I am rooting for KSU for an undefeated season, mostly because of Synder. The dude deserves a NC. However Tech has been a giant killer before too, so this should be a good game.
